A Politically Correct Christmas

To avoid offending anybody, the school dropped religion altogether and started singing about the weather. At my son's school, they now hold the winter program in February and sing increasingly non memorable songs such as "Winter Wonderland," "Frosty the Snowman" and--this is a real song--"Suzy Snowflake," all of which is pretty funny because we live in Miami. A visitor from another planet would assume that the children belonged to the Church of Meteorology. (Dave Barry in his "Notes on Western Civilization" Chicago Tribune Magazine, July 28, 1991)

When will we stand up and throw out this nonsense?

Modern kids don't learn Christmas carols. They are not sung at School, they are not sung at home, and the parents don't take the kids to church. In my town, many activities are planned for Sunday mornings (e.g., swim team competitions). Thus the rapid slide into paganism. It takes committed parents to raise their kids as Christians.

Despite the negative tone of this post, I wish you a very merry Christmas, father. And thank you for your witness as an orthodox priest committed to the gospel of our Savior.

I went to two of my grandchildren's "Winter Concert" at the Brown Public School in Peabody Mass. All the songs were Frosty-Rudolph types--except the two Kwanza songs and the 3 Hannukah songs (including one about the miracle of the burning candles which would not go out.)
But nary a song about the Christmas star, etc. even though this school is probably 95% Christian.--Deacon John M. Bresnahan
