Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, the Apostolic Nuncio (better known as Papal Nuncio) to the United States will honor the Ninth Annual Walk for Life West Coast on January 26, 2013, organizers have announced. Archbishop Viganò is the 14th Papal representative to the U.S. The post was established in 1893. The appointment of Archbishop Viganò as Apostolic Nuncio to the United States was announced on October 19, 2011, a date chosen by the Archbishop himself, because it is the Feast of the North American Martyrs.
“What an honor! I am so excited—this is the next best thing to having the Holy Father himself with us!” said Eva Muntean a co-founder of the Walk. That is in fact true—Archbishop Viganò is the Holy Father’s diplomatic Ambassador to the United States, and as with any other Ambassador, his presence would appear to indicate his boss’s endorsement of the event. The nuncio will join an expected 14 Catholic bishops at the Walk for Life West Coast, led by San Francisco’s new Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone—the largest number ever.
