SF Supervisors "Debate" Free Speech for Pro-Lifers
Yesterday the San Francisco Board of Supervisors began "debating" whether to restrict the freedom of speech of pro-lifers. It is certain that the BOS will pass this law. It is equally certain that the Life Legal Defense Foundation will bring suit to have it declared unconstitutional. You can donate to the LLDF here.
NBC's local affiliate covered the story yesterday. One of our great 40 Days for Life members, Jamie Blinn, makes some great points. Check it out!

Surprise Surprise: Obamacare Supporting "Catholic" Hospital Chain Argues "Unborn Fetus Not A Person"
We well know the true colors of the Catholic Health Association and Catholic Healthcare West (which now calls itself Dignity or something like that). Look at the subhead under our "A Shepherd's Voice" banner for our position.
Here's a story, appearing all over the net, that makes the position of those organizations crystal clear. We begin with the tragic facts, via The Gawker:
Catholic Hospital Chain Kills Wrongful Death Lawsuit by Arguing that a Fetus is Not a Person
Neetzan Zimmerman
A major Catholic health provider has successfully dismantled a wrongful death lawsuit brought against it by arguing — in defiance of its own long-held doctrine — that a dead fetus is not the same as a dead person.
The case involves the 2006 death of 31-year-old Lori Stodghill, a woman seven months pregnant with twin boys, who was brought in to the emergency room at St. Thomas More Hospital in Cañon City, Colorado, on New Year's Day.
According to her husband Jeremy, Lori was vomiting and had shortness of breath — symptoms that would later be attributed to the clogged artery that caused her untimely demise.
After he parked the car, Jeremy returned to the ER to find Lori unconscious. Less than an hour later she would be dead of a massive heart attack, and her twins would die with her...."
We move from sadness at the Stodgehill's tragic loss to fury at behavior the hospital, which is part of Catholic Health Intitiatives (the second-largest chain of "Catholic" hospitals in the country), and their attorneys
"A short while later Jeremy, who believes the Cesarean section might have saved his twins, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the faith-based nonprofit which operates St. Thomas More.Catholic Health Initiatives is the second-largest faith-based health system in America, and boasts 78 hospitals in 17 different states.
CHI claims to follow the tenets of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care [PDF], which clearly state that "The Church's defense of life encompasses the unborn."
But when push came to shove, CHI abandoned their beliefs in order to win a malpractice lawsuit.
CHI's lawyer, Jason Langley, successfully convinced both the Fremont County District Court and the Colorado Court of Appeals to throw out Jeremy's lawsuit on the basis that CHI can not be sued for the wrongful death of a fetus, because it is not a person.
'[The court] should not overturn the long-standing rule in Colorado that the term ‘person,' as is used in the Wrongful Death Act, encompasses only individuals born alive. Colorado state courts define ‘person' under the Act to include only those born alive. Therefore Plaintiffs cannot maintain wrongful death claims based on two unborn fetuses.'
Jeremy's attorneys are now seeking to have their case heard by the Colorado Supreme Court....
How could they do such a thing? Well, suprise surprise, here's Catholic Health Initiatives response to the Supreme Court's ruling on Obamacare last year:
CHI Applauds Supreme Court Decision on Affordable Care Act
Date 06/28/2012
The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act 5-4 in a long-anticipated decision this morning. The court ruled that the individual mandate was constitutional, paving the way for the implementation of a law that will provide health coverage to many millions of additional people across the country.
CHI is gratified by the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the Affordable Care Act. CHI’s highest priority is access and coverage for all, and the Affordable Care Act is a huge step in that direction.
While the law is not perfect, it goes a long way toward helping us all care for those who are most vulnerable and who need our help the most.
With or without the Affordable Care Act, significant delivery system change is underway in health care in this country. And, CHI will continue to participate in delivery system reforms that provide coordinated, efficient care; reduce costs; improve health outcomes; and tie payments to value provided as we continue to do everything we can to increase access to affordable care for all.
CHI will work with the Catholic Health Association, the American Hospital Association and other groups to champion health care reform that protects life, makes coverage available and affordable and puts our system on a path to reducing costs while providing better and safer care.
CHI remains concerned with one key component of the law, which would require contraceptive coverage for all employees of Catholic organizations. CHI has indicated to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services that the only acceptable approaches are to broaden the definition of “religious employers” excluded from the coverage mandate to exempt Catholic hospitals; or to have the federal government provide the coverage itself. CHI remains hopeful that CMS will not infringe on the religious liberty of church-affiliated organizations.
UPDATE: A fellow who blogs on medical issues by the name of DrX makes this point:
"Because Catholic hospitals are not administratively linked or supervised by bishops, it's certainly possible that the attorneys for Catholic Health Initiatives mounted this defense without the knowledge of any Catholic bishops. So now comes the test. Will the bishops insist that Catholic Health Care Initiatives must abandon this legal strategy? If not, then it's moral game, set and match against Church opposition to ACA birth control coverage requirements."

The Holy Father, Cardinal Sarah and Reform at Catholic Charities
Brick by Brick, as Fr. Z would say.
Last week, at the Ad Limina visit of the Bishops of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming, His Holiness Pope Benedict discussed the role of the Catholic University, and specifically problems "in such basic areas as compliance with the mandate laid down in Canon 812 for those who teach theological disciplines." Are you listening USF? Reverend Pizzuto?
On May 2 His Eminence Robert Cardinal Sarah, under the Holy Father, issued the "Theological Inspiration of the New Juridical Framework of Caritas Internationalis." The document may be read here. It is the result of years of work, and reflects the Holy Father's concern that "Catholic" organizations be faithful to the teaching of the Church.
The cardinal, who heads the Pontifical Council Cor Unum, implied that the 2 May implementation of new Vatican-imposed statutes for the Rome-based CI office might be a first step in a wider reform of the Caritas confederation at national level.
“This juridical corpus [for CI] does not per se concern the national Caritas organisations, which maintain their autonomy and depend on their respective ordinaries. But it could inspire the bishops and the episcopal conferences eventually to revise the statutes of their diocesan or national Caritas agencies,” the cardinal wrote in a commentary published in the 3 May issue of L’Osservatore Romano.
In the case of Caritas Internationalis, the new statutes and a fresh set of internal regulations stipulate that Cor Unum must approve its statements, its budget and expenditure, contracts with other non-governmental organisations and its hiring of personnel. In a similar way, the more than 160 national members of the Caritas confederation, such as Cafod and Catholic Charities USA, could face analogous regulations if their bishops’ conferences adopt the cardinal’s suggestion.
Since Pope Benedict XVI took office in 2005, the Vatican has increasingly exerted pressure on church organisations, such as CI, to strengthen their Catholic identity and to help them become more explicit instruments of evangelisation.
On May 12, the Tablet, UK reported on a commentary Cardinal Sarah gave May 3 in L'Osservatore Romano.
Cor Unum chief suggests further local Caritas reforms
Robert Mickens - 12 May 2012
Cardinal Robert Sarah, whose Vatican office recently gained sweeping powers over the operations of Caritas Internationalis (CI), has suggested that bishops around the world impose similar controls over their own local and national Caritas agencies. This would include Cafod, the aid organisation of the Church in England and Wales.

One way the new CI statutes will ensure this is through a more careful selection of employees who profess and faithfully live out the Vatican’s teachings on faith and morals. Such scrutiny, if applied at local and national levels, could have repercussions for current hiring practices"
"Repercussions for current hiring practices."
That is something sorely needed, (Brian Cahill comes to mind) and God bless and guide the Holy Father and Cardinal Sarah as they put this into practice.

Former CCCYO Boss / Current "Catholic San Francisco" Columnist Attacks Bishops On HHS Mandate
That would be Brian Cahill, immediate past Executive Director of San Francisco's Catholic Charities. Cahill, whose column Catholic San Francisco, the newspaper of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, publishes from time to time, had a column published in today's San Francisco Chronicle. In the column, Cahill attacked each and every Catholic bishop in the United States for opposing Obama's unconstitutional HHS Mandate.
We point out that A Shepherd's Voice nailed this Cahill as an enemy of the Church years ago, when some of the Bishops whom he now attacks (he attacks all of them, since they have all opposed Obama's mandate) were perfectly happy with him, employed him, supported him, and attended his going away party.
We won't rehash Cahill's misdeeds here (follow the second link above for an exhaustive list)--suffice it to say they included honoring big-time abortion supporters, contributing money in support of counterfeit marriage and in opposition to Proposition 8, and allowing transvestites to "entertain" at CCCYO events. And who can forget the "gay adoptions" fiasco:
"It was under Mr. Cahill’s leadership that Catholic Charities embarked on the ill-advised “partnership” with Family Builders by Adoption -- 'the gayest adoption agency in the country.' That three-year partnership, which came to an end in 2009, united Catholic Charities with an organization that thought it was a good idea to advertise for gay adoptive 'dads' on the 'leather' and 'porn' pages of San Francisco’s two homosexual-oriented newspapers. The ad campaign, exposed by CalCatholic, was so outrageous that even the city government of San Francisco realized it had to shut it down."
UPDATE: And perfectly, on March 21, 2012, Cahill will be the Lenten Vespers speaker at (where else?) San Francisco's Most Holy Redeemer Church.

Support California Catholic Daily!
California Catholic Daily, to which we contribute from time to time, needs YOUR help.
CalCatholic keeps the fire burning on issues that many Dioceses in California would prefer just not to see.
Unless they can develop a base of monthly contributors, they will no longer be able to publish. You can contribute by going here.
Here are a few recent CalCatholic stories about the Church in San Francisco and Northern California not found anywhere else:
Ties to the homosexual power structure
Honorary committee for Catholic Charities of San Francisco annual fundraiser includes politicians well known for their opposition to Church teachings
On March 4, Catholic Charities of San Francisco (CCCYO) will host its annual Loaves and Fishes Fundraising dinner at the upscale St. Regis hotel in San Francisco. As is the case every year, the honorary committee includes a number of local politicians. And, as usual these politicians are completely and without exception actively opposed to the Church’s teaching on issues of life or the family.

“Extreme agenda”
‘Catholic’ Pelosi vows all-out attack on pro-life measures introduced in Congress
U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the San Francisco Democrat and former House Speaker who describes herself as “an ardent, practicing Catholic,” has vowed to rally the public against a series of anti-abortion measures now pending in Congress.
“Pelosi described the GOP push as the ‘most radical assault’ on women's reproductive rights ‘in our lifetimes,’” the Washington Post reported, based on a Feb. 10 conference call Pelosi made to supporters. “And she was equally blunt in her assessment of right-wing assaults on family planning. ‘They are at a different philosophical place,’ she said, characterizing their view as: ‘all engagement has to result in a child.’ Pelosi noted that contraception and family planning is ‘not consistent with their belief that it's all about procreation.’

More on Catholic Charities
" 'The love of money is the root of all evils' and there are some who, pursuing it, have wandered away from the faith, and so given their souls any number of fatal wounds."- First Letter of St. Paul to Timothy 6:10. Jerusalem Bible Translation.
"The 2008 Loaves & Fishes Dinner met/exceeded our financial objectives and the attendance of all honorees and dignitaries was complete. " -Brian Cahill, Executive Director of Catholic Charities, quoted in the Bay Area Reporter--"Serving the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgender Community since 1971"
Mr. Cahill's short sentence speaks volumes.
Here's Mr. Cahill at the event honoring Mr. George M. Marcus. Mr Marcus has given over $175,000 to ballot initiatives that promote the Culture of Death, all of which were vehemently opposed by the Catholic Church. And here's Mr. Cahill honoring Levi Strauss. The Levi Strauss Foundation has given well over $1,000,000 to organizations worldwide that provide and promote abortion/contraception, not to mention numerous homosexual activist organizations: GLSEN, GLAAD, etc.
The CCCYO Press Release on the event is here. They took in $600,000 less than last year. And one name is conspicuous by its absence.
