Congratulations and Thanks, Bishop Vigneron!

Good Bishop Allen H. Vigneron of the Diocese of Oakland has been named Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Detroit. A cardinal's hat often goes with this particular post.

But we are certainly sorry to see his Excellency leave. He has been in the forefront of the fight to defend marriage here in California. In 2004, when San Francisco's juvenile Mayor Gavin Newsom decided that he was the law in California and started to issue marriage licenses, we had an all-night vigil at Saints Peter and Paul, followed by a Mass, and a rally to defend marriage. Bishop Vigneron gave the homily at the Mass. And he was one of the California Bishops who contributed to the recent electoral victory over same-sex "marriage." We congratulate His Excellency, and we pray that the Holy Spirit will send the Diocese of Oakland a worthy succesor.
