On March 9, Pope Benedict spoke to the American Bishops in Rome, and reminded them (not that the Bishops needed it) what the the defense of marriage is ultimately about:
"Defending the institution of marriage as a social reality is ultimately a question of justice, since it entails safeguarding the good of the entire human community and the rights of parents and children alike."
The defense of marriage is a defense of the common good of society, and the redefinition of marriage is an attempt to put special interests above the common good. It's destructive and self-destructive, since attacks the common good, if successful, harm those doing the attacking.
