SF, Oakland Bishops Act on Obamacare--Pray God it's not Too Late

A blast email from George Wesolek, Director of the Office of Public Policy and Social Concerns of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, was sent to all the parishes of the Archdiocese this afternoon. It included pulpit announcements, plus the bulletin insert from the USCCB. The bulletin insert includes these messages to congress and the senate:

ACTION: Contact Members through e-mail, phone calls or FAX letters.
 To send a pre-written, instant e-mail to Congress go to www.usccb.org/action.
 Call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at: 202-224-3121, or call your Members’ local offices.
 Full contact info can be found on Members’ web sites at www.house.gov & www.senate.gov.

MESSAGE to SENATE:
“During floor debate on the health care reform bill, please support an amendment to
incorporate longstanding policies against abortion funding and in favor of conscience rights.
If these serious concerns are not addressed, the final bill should be opposed.”

MESSAGE to HOUSE:
“Please support the Stupak Amendment that addresses essential pro-life concerns on abortion funding and conscience rights in the health care reform bill. Help ensure that the Rule for the
bill allows a vote on this amendment. If these serious concerns are not addressed, the final bill should be opposed.”

WHEN: Both House and Senate are preparing for floor votes now. Act today! Thank you!

Bishop Cordileone sent out a similar email:

"We want to make you aware that Bishop Cordileone sent out an urgent email to all pastors and priests in the Diocese of Oakland earlier this morning. The email is encouraging a parish-wide distribution of the attached Bulletin Insert at all masses this weekend.

We are now at a critical moment in encouraging people to engage in the health care debate, as congressional leaders will be attempting to put together final bills for floor consideration this week. We apologize for the late notice of this urgent but necessary activity."

Unbelievable. Where were our esteemed bishops years ago when our Catholic legislators first began parroting the “Personally opposed, but …” mantra? Where were they last year when the Catholic Voters Guide, a document that basically said nothing and stood for nothing, was put together?

As recently as last year the head of my own diocese, a vocal Obama supporter, chided me for being a “single issue (pro-life) voter.” Now he’s all upset about the Healthcare Bill? What did he expect from the most anti-death administration ever?

Unbelievable.
